Users Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
