The Senate on Tuesday quickly approved to a measure that will mandate the disclosure of investigative files associated with the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a overwhelming vote in the House of Representatives and a reversal by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The White House relented after an extended period of trying to delay the joint action involving a case that has followed the president since his comeback to the White House.
Swift Passage in Congress
The Senate acted by consensus, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a formal roll call vote, speeding up the process. Hours earlier, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a 427-1 tally.
“The American people have been patient long enough. Those affected have waited long enough,” the top Senate Democrat said in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before urging the chamber to pass it unanimously. “Reveal the truth. Let transparency reign.”
Presidential Signature
The bill next goes to Donald Trump for his endorsement. He indicated on Monday that he would sign the measure.
Though Trump has for an extended period rejected the controversy over the authorities' approach of the investigation as a “political stunt”, he voiced approval for the House bill over the past few days, and stated he would sign the measure if it is presented to him.
Support and Opposition
The Democratic party, along with victims and their representatives who were present in a House gallery, cheered after the bill was enacted. The sole “no” vote came from Clay Higgins, who stated he was concerned the measure would disclose personal information of individuals involved, those under scrutiny and others implicated in the investigation.
