European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
