Defense Department Investigation Finds Defense Secretary Put Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Messaging App Chat.

A highly anticipated Pentagon review has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by sharing secret intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Event

The chat group in question contained details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not approved for transmitting classified information.

Serious Risk to Forces

The internal investigation determined that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the lives of US troops if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Reaction

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed details that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He further stated that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is expected to be made public in the coming days.
